Late 1860's Peach and Gray Gown

This stunning reception dress is an exciting example of the transition in fashion that went on post Civil War. About 1866, the skirt began to extend in the back and throughout the following two years became narrower as the train became longer. As early as 1867, the skirt began to be pulled back with emphasis on the rear of the gown. The bustle silhouette emerged in 1868. This gown shows both the extended train and the narrow hips of the late 1860s. Inside the skirt there is evidence that it was later bustled by narrow cords. The gown is three piece in its construction, incorporating a removable self fabric chemisette as well as the bodice and skirt. It is composed of grey and gold shot taffeta lavishly trimmed with peach taffeta pleats. Yards of black silk velvet ribbon outline the pleats and trim the bodice. The ribbon is hand embroidered in a stylized daisy motif. The technique is delicate, incorporating both satin stitch and French knots. Elaborate pleated trim adorns the bodice. The skirt closes at left front with hook and eye in classic 1860's manner. The bodice laces up the back as well as the chemisette.

Condition is good with some moisture spotting as seen in photos and heavy underarm discoloration. There is some breakage to the fabric under the arms as well. A line of discoloration along the front bodice seam appears to be from perspiration. The chemisette has some spots from either age or moisture; see picture. The original laces are not present. I have used craft ribbon to lace the dress.

Antique clothing is fragile and requires careful handling. I take great care in describing condition, but I may overlook something. Buyer should anticipate that there will be age related flaws in any antique clothing item.
